The NETS standard that is concerned with plagiarism is Digital Citizenship. If a student plagiarizes or a teacher lets a student slide with plagiarism, this standard has not been met. Plagiarism is not a legal and responsible use of information and technology, and should not be taken lightly. Teachers must uphold these standards and require every student to create and apply their own ideas for assignments. However, if a student is allowed to use other sources, they must be properly taught to cite that author or source.
Turnitin is a great tool to identify plagiarism. This site is very easy to use and it is free, which is great. Every student can submit their papers through this site with ease and automatically see if they have used too much of someone else’s work or ideas. As students turn in their work, they will be notified by the grader that is built into the site what percentage of their paper is plagiarized. If teachers want to use it, they can also sign up for an account and use it to submit student’s work, which makes a teacher’s busy life a lot easier. The less a teacher has to grade, the happier he/she is, so this will help teachers to identify plagiarism with ease. Overall, Turnitin is a great site for both students and teachers to use and help cut back on plagiarism.
